Course overview
The PADI Search and Recovery Diver Specialty course is designed to equip you with techniques for locating objects underwater. You’ll learn how to safely and effectively bring heavy items to the surface using a lift bag. This program is an excellent opportunity to hone your underwater skills.
At Northern Underwater Explorers, we place a strong emphasis on maintaining buoyancy, trim, and spatial awareness while performing various search and recovery tasks.
Price Includes:
- 1 Theory Session
- 4 Open Water Training Days (counting for a total of 5 dives)
- All basic scuba equipment (including regulator, BCD, tanks, and weights)
- PADI Search & Recovery eLearning Code. Once your course payment is processed, we will send you a link to access your eLearning materials.
Minimum age of 12 years
- Drysuit – Rentals available for $105.00 (includes undergarments, hood, boots, and gloves; previous experience/training with drysuit use is required)
- Dive Computer – Rentals available for $45.00
- Compass – Rentals available for $22.00
- Dive Light – Rentals available for $34.00
- Fins – Rentals available for $42.00
In this course, you will learn and practice the following:
- Various underwater search techniques for locating both large and small objects
- Methods for relocating objects from the surface
- Techniques for tying a variety of knots underwater
- How to rig and use a lift bag effectively

Our instructors have extensive experience teaching the Search & Recovery program and will provide feedback to help you maintain optimal buoyancy, trim, and awareness while engaged in task-oriented diving.
This program is conducted on an individual basis, allowing you to tailor your training. Contact Northern Underwater Explorers to book your course today! Training is available on weekends and during the week. While we may occasionally add students to group sessions, we always maintain a maximum ratio of 3 students to 1 instructor.
Course Prerequisites
- PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent)
- Minimum age of 12 years
- Recent diving experience within the past 12 months. If you haven’t dived in the last year, please contact us before registering.

Medical Statement
All students must complete a Medical Statement prior to any in-water activities. If you answer “yes” to any of the medical questions, please consult with Northern Underwater Explorers, as you may need to see a physician before starting the course.
